St Chad’s Church, Shrewsbury has created a special memorial for the 113 men listed on Shropshire War Memorials for whom no information can be found.  These names cannot be linked for certain with the service records of any individual soldier. In the week of Wednesday 10th December there were no anniversaries of Shropshire deaths so these 113 were included instead.

Based on the idea behind the memorial at the Tower of London, 113 poppies were placed in a display spilling out of the church window on St Chad’s Terrace.  Members of the public were invited to add a poppy to the display and take a card showing one of the names which are not identified.

Father Mark Chadwick, vicar of St Chad’s said “Every man and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Great War was unique and special to their family.  We may not be able to be sure who these 113 are, but we will ensure that they are not forgotten.”
